The older I get, the more important a good bed is to me when I travel. There’s nothing that will wreck a vacation like waking up with an aching back, or not being able to sleep well because the bedding is uncomfortable. A few things have led to my pickiness when it comes to beds and bedding.

Because of a stint in college working in the home department at Macy’s in the Green Hills Mall, I became very particular when it comes to quality bedding. Once you know the difference a set of high quality sheets make, you’ll be ruined for cheap bedding forever. I actually wrote a guest blog for Redland Cotton a couple years ago, and I still stand by it. These are my favorite sheets I own, though I don’t use them in the carriage house because of the price and the fact that it’s an Airbnb that could take a beating with so many different guests. Instead, I bought three sets of these sheets from Costco for each bed, as well as two of these duvet inserts.

I’m also picky about a good mattress. In college I could sleep fully clothed on the concrete floor of a friend’s dorm room, wake up, and go to class bright and early the next morning, feeling great. These days though, I’m almost thirty and my nightly bedtime routine involves white noise, total darkness, my ergonomic pillow, a second pillow for under my arm, ice water, a lip mask, and a partridge in a pear tree. (speaking of which, this alarm clock wakes you up gently with a sunrise, and it has sleep meditations. I’ve thought about packing it on long trips, it’s so great.)

When it came to the beds in the carriage house, I wanted to make sure our guests had the best experience possible. The bedrooms are on the smaller side, and have sloped ceilings due to the dormers, so space was limited. Our Airbnb manager told us that they have more frequent bookings for properties with at least one king sized bed, so we decided to put a king bed in one room and a queen bed with a sitting area in the other. Let’s start today with the queen bedroom.

The queen bedroom bed frame is kind of a hodgepodge situation. The headboard is from One Kings Lane and the mattress frame is linked here. It would have been easier to get a frame that was all-in-one, but once I found this headboard I knew I had to make it work. The mattress is the same one we’ve bought several times for airbnbs or guest rooms, and we love it!

Again, because this is an Airbnb, we needed several sets of bedding so that at least one set can be laundered while we have guests using another set. I bought this duvet set and two of these duvet sets for the queen bedroom, and honestly love all three.

Time for pillow talk: I got all of the standard pillows (six in total) from Costco. This is not sponsored by Costco, but if anyone from Costco is reading this… I love your work. When making a bed I always like to have two sleeping pillows per person, plus two for the shams. This is definitely a more traditional look, but I love how full and inviting it makes a bed look. If guests want fewer pillows, they can just pile them on the chair or the floor, but you’ll never have anyone wishing they had just one more pillow to get comfortable. Throw pillows are much more subjective, in my opinion. Here, I opted for two pillows with these shams, which are currently sold out, so I’d look for something similar to this or this if you want a similar look. These don’t come in a similar color, but I do love the price!

I love the quilt, too, but unfortunately it was a clearance TJ Maxx find, and I can’t find it online. I do feel like it’s important to have multiple blanket options because sleeping temperatures are so subjective. I like to give guests an option of a light cotton quilt and a mid-weight or all-season duvet on the bed, and add a synthetic fuzzy blanket in the closet for those who get extra chilly at night.

The lights beside the bed were a Facebook Marketplace find, but I’ve had so many people ask about them that I asked the person I bought them from for the maker. She asked the shop for the plug addition, but these are the same lights otherwise. The dresser was also a Facebook Marketplace find, and I love the charm it adds. Another great secondhand find was the vintage rug, which I found through this shop on Etsy.

Typically I prefer a larger side table, but in the interest of symmetry and a small room, space was limited and I opted for these, which I love. The Roman shades are from Home Depot, and though we’ve used Home Depot for all of the custom roman shades in our main house, these didn’t have the same quality as the first ones we ordered for our home several years ago, so I can’t recommend them for the price.

Creating this little reading nook was a fun project. I didn’t know if the closet door would inhibit having a chair here because of traffic flow, but this little chair fit perfectly, and the lamp tucks behind so it doesn’t get in the way of the closet doors’ function.

I had been collecting art for years, and it was so much fun to raid my art stash for the carriage house! Everything you see here is thrifted or found at estate sales. The carriage house really helped justify all of the purchase I’ve made over the years with the reasoning of “It’s so cute, I’ll find a place for it someday!” Now I just need another renovation to look forward to so I can keep justifying my vintage art and rug habit.
